SUMMARY:Engaging adult users of domestic and family violence: Concepts\, roles and practice tips for AOD and mental health practitioners | Online
DESCRIPTION:The Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use at the University of Sydney has been funded by the Australian Government Department of Health\, Disability and Ageing to develop a series of on-demand webinars on evidence-based practice. Our webinars are freely available and focus on building capacity in relation to evidence-based practice approaches to the management and treatment of co-occurring alcohol and other drug (AOD) and mental health conditions. \nThis August\, we bring you a two-part special webinar series on domestic and family violence (DFV). Presented by Associate Professor Sophie Isobel and Rodney Vlais\, these special edition 90-minute webinars will explore the two perspectives of working with both victim survivors and adult users of DFV\, and attendees are encouraged to come along to both. \nSpeaker: Rodney Vlais (them/they) is a behaviour change specialist\, training provider\, supervisor\, evaluator and psychologist in engaging men who cause family violence harm. They have substantial experience both as a men’s behaviour change practitioner and in policy and capability-building work\, running or contributing to projects commissioned by NGOs and/or government agencies across Australia. \nBy the end of this webinar\, attendees will be able to:\n• Understand their role in addressing domestic and family violence (DFV) use in the context of core service delivery to the client\, and opportunities to contribute towards the safety of those experiencing the client’s violence.\n• Consider intersectional feminist\, trauma-informed and shame-sensitive practice concepts when leaning into ‘courageous conversations’ with clients who use violence\, when safe to do so.\n• Hear some examples of practice tips\, and about available resources to explore in more depth. \nThis is part two of a two-part special webinar series on domestic and family violence. We strongly encourage attendance at both webinars. Part one of this webinar series will take place on Monday 3rd of August 12:00pm-1:30pm AEST. Associate Professor Sophie Isobel will present on Navigating the intersection of domestic and family violence and alcohol and other drug services: practice considerations for staff. \nTarget audience: AOD workers \nClick here for more information and to register
