BERTIE

A comprehensive and evidence-based education package named BERTIE – Better lives for residents though innovative education – has been created to upskill the aged care workforce and help improve the lives of residents.

Designed and developed in response to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, the BERTIE education package aims to build capacity and capability in the residential aged care workforce and supports both clinical and non-clinical staff to recognise and manage early signs of deteriorating health of residents.

The informative 20-module package is engaging and easy to digest and is designed to be undertaken at a pace that suits individual learners. Each module consists of a short video, summary sheet and quick quiz. The wide range of topics included in the BERTIE training package cover subjects such as pain assessment, communication, advanced care planning, how to assess acute deterioration, movement and mobility, and palliative care.

Subject matter experts in the project team included sixteen geriatricians, two First Nations clinicians/academics, a registered nurse/health coach and a resident/consumer expert.

BERTIE is free to all residential aged care workers in Victoria and NSW border communities that fall under a Victorian PHN and can be accessed via the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission’s ALIS platform. An information sheet is currently being developed on how to access ALIS and BERTIE.
