The Workforce Incentive Payment – Practice Stream encourages multidisciplinary and team-based models of care for general practice patients. The program provides financial incentives to general practices to engage a range of health professionals.

The Workforce Incentive Payment – Practice Stream provides primary care practices with more flexibility to address its community’s needs around delivery of care to patients with complex and chronic conditions.

Workforce Incentive Payment – Practice Stream payments are designed to assist general practices with the cost of engaging eligible health professionals. They are not intended to cover the whole cost of engaging eligible health professionals.

The following are eligible health professionals in the Workforce Incentive Payment – Practice Stream:

  • Nurse practitioners
  • Registered nurses
  • Enrolled nurses
  • Midwives
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners
  • Allied health professionals such as audiologists, chiropractors, diabetes educators, dietitians/nutritionists, exercise physiologists, occupational therapists, orthoptists, orthotists/prosthetists, osteopaths, paramedics, pharmacists (non-dispensing role), physiotherapists, podiatrists, psychologists, social workers, speech pathologists.

Once registered for the program, practices are required to maintain their eligibility to receive payments. They must maintain:

  • Practice accreditation (renewing before it expires)
  • Employment of at least one full-time or part-time general practitioner
  • Engagement of at least one eligible health professional
  • Eligibility for Practice Incentives Program (PIP), if a PIP consenting practice
  • A specified amount of public liability insurance as per the guidelines.
